In next 5 years, 53 major Infra projects are expected to become operational in Mumbai & MMR, transforming it into a major eco-transit hub

X: @prashanthamine

Mumbai: In the next 5 years, nearly 53 major infrastructure projects are expected to become operational in Mumbai and neighbouring Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) which will transform the face of the whole region into a major eco-transit hub. Out of the 53 projects, nearly 45 of them which are in Mumbai and MMR should become operational by 2028.

One of them includes, Mumbai’s first underground Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line). The segment between Aarey and Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) which is 97% complete, can become operational very soon in the near future. The line from BKC to Colaba is still under construction.

The region between Dahanu Road, Vasai-Virar, to the region between Thane-Bhiwandi-Shahapur-Kalyan-Badlapur-Asangaon and the region between Panvel-Ulwe-Taloja will become the new Transit Oriented Development (TOD) nodes or hubs.

This will take the pressure of development off Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai and decongest the region by developing the hinterlands of the MMR.

With a web of major infrastructure projects like Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train project, Navi Mumbai International Airport, Atal Setu (MTHL), Virar-Alibaug Multimodal corridor and Mumbai’s partly underground Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) the region is all set to become the economic, trade and industrial power house of not just Mumbai, or Maharashtra, but also of India as well.

The Dombivli-Mankoli Bridge or Motagaon Mankoli Bridge is a crucial infrastructure project for people living in the Kalyan-Dombivli belt.

Currently, there are two routes from Dombivli to Mumbai. The first is from Dombivli-Mumbra-Thane-Mulund-NH3-Mumbai Fort.

Second is the Dombivli-Kalyan-Bhiwandi-Bypass-NH3-Mumbai. Both routes are heavily congested. Travelling from Dombivli to Kalyan can take as long as 2 hours during peak traffic hours.

Hence, this bridge will ease the traffic issues and, most importantly, it will reduce the time of commute from Dombivli to Thane to just half an hour. It will also reduce vehicular movement on the 2 longer routes.

The six-lane bridge is being constructed on the creek between Motagaon in Dombivli and Mankoli on the Bhiwandi side. This bridge will benefit 60 lakh people who travel via this route daily.

Project Feature:

Cost of Project: Rs. 74.41 Crores

This work pertains to Construction of Mankoli Motagaon Link Road.
The link is fast disbursement of traffic from Dombivali to NH-160 (old NH-3) to reach Thane & Mumbai via NH-160 (old NH-3).
The link is to divert traffic flow form NH-160 (old NH-3) and NH – 8 to Khopoli via proposed Kalyan Ring Road – Katai Naka – Badlapur – Karjat – Hal link without entering into habited area of Mumbra, Shil Phata, Kalamboli and Panvel.

Present Status: Physical Progress – 54%

1). Nashik-Pune 8-lane Elevated High-Speed Corridor – Nashik Phata to Chakan

The central government on August 2 approved an 8-lane elevated high-speed corridor from Nashik Phata to Chakan at the cost of ₹ 7827 crore. The road will facilitate smooth, high-speed traffic connection for industrial hubs at Chakan and Bhosari on NH-60 between Pune and Nashik.

The central government has given the green light for the construction of an elevated road from Kasarwadi Nashik Phata to Rajgurunagar on the Pune-Nashik Highway.
This project is expected to alleviate the chronic traffic congestion in areas such as Bhosari, Moshi, Chimbali, Kuruli, and Chakan, providing much-needed relief to motorists while also spurring development in these regions.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed an eight-lane elevated corridor, which will be constructed on a Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) basis.

Once the proposed Ring Road is operational, it will connect Nagar Road, Solapur, Satara, and the Mumbai Highway to the expressway.

Planned Route:

A single-pier eight-lane elevated road from Nashik Phata to Khed.

The main road will be beneath the elevated road with service roads on both sides.

The construction will be done in two packages:
Package-1: Nashik Phata to Chakan (16.735 kilometres).
Package-2: Chakan to Khed (13.128 kilometres).

The elevated road will pass over the Rajamata Jijau Flyover in Bhosari.

Status: Project Approved by Centre.
