Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hailed the India-US trade agreement as the “biggest trade deal of the century,” highlighting its significance for India’s global stature and economic growth. The landmark deal, announced after a telephonic conversation between PM Modi and US President Donald Trump, reduces reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 18%, offering significant relief to exporters and strengthening bilateral economic ties.

Addressing the NDA parliamentary party meeting, Modi said, “The biggest event of this century is India becoming a decisive force on the world stage. This agreement is not just a trade deal—it reflects India’s rising influence in global affairs.”

The Prime Minister also shared a lighthearted moment, joking that some people were “devastated” by Trump’s decision, drawing laughter from party MPs. He stressed the strategic importance of the deal, noting that it will boost India’s exports and open fresh opportunities for domestic industries.

The deal also requires India to cease purchases of Russian oil, while increasing imports from the US and potentially Venezuela, according to White House officials. “This breakthrough resets the trade relations between the two nations and marks a historic moment for Indian businesses,” the official said.

The NDA MPs at the meeting felicitated the Prime Minister for the agreement, which comes after months of negotiations and a year-long tariff dispute. Modi emphasized that India’s economic resilience and diplomatic efforts were key factors in securing the deal, which benefits both nations and strengthens their strategic partnership.
