Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya has come under criticism after a video showing him commenting on the physical appearance of a woman councillor during a public event in Indore went viral on social media.
The incident took place on Sunday during a programme organised to inaugurate development works in Indore’s Ward 6. BJP councillor Sandhya Yadav was also present at the event.
Vijayvargiya Comments on Councillor’s Appearance
The controversy began after Yadav walked towards a microphone during the programme.
In the video circulating online, Vijayvargiya is heard saying, “Sandhya didi ki bhi chaudai badh gayi hai thodi si,” which translates to, “Sandhya didi has also put on a little weight.”
The remark was made while Yadav was approaching the microphone stand. A party worker can also be seen walking behind her in the video.
The clip later spread widely on social media, with the minister’s comment drawing criticism over its reference to the councillor’s physical appearance.
Congress Criticises the Minister
The video triggered a political response from the Opposition Congress.
AICC media coordinator Neelabh Shukla described the remark as “condemnable” and criticised Vijayvargiya for commenting publicly on the appearance of a woman elected representative.
Shukla also alleged that the BJP often speaks about respecting women, but claimed that comments about women’s appearance by BJP leaders have become a recurring issue.
The Congress criticism has added to the political controversy surrounding the viral video.
Incident Took Place During Development Programme
The event was held in Indore as part of the inauguration of development projects. Reports said the projects were worth around Rs 7 crore and were being launched in Ward 6.
Vijayvargiya was present at the programme as a senior BJP leader and state Cabinet minister. Yadav, who is a councillor from the area, was also among those attending the event.
The video has since become the focus of discussion on social media, with the controversy centred on whether comments about the physical appearance of an elected woman representative were appropriate in a public programme.
Vijayvargiya Yet to Respond
As of the latest reports, Vijayvargiya had not issued a public clarification on the remark.
The controversy comes as the video continues to circulate online and Congress leaders step up their criticism of the minister.
The incident has also renewed discussion about the language used by public representatives while addressing or referring to women at public events.
