Six children drowned in a pond in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district on Monday while they were taking a bath during the Karma-Dharma festival, turning a family and community celebration into a tragedy.
The incident took place in Taraita Bahiyar under the Sultanganj police station area. The victims included three boys and three girls, all believed to be around 12 to 13 years old.
The deceased have been identified as Jyoti Kumari, Meenakshi Kumari, Ayush Kumar, Rahul Kumar, Pooja Kumari and Vikas Kumar.
Children Went to Pond for Festival Bath
According to information available so far, the children had gone together to bathe in the pond as part of the Karma-Dharma festival celebrations.
The situation reportedly turned tragic when one of the children went into deeper water and began to drown.
Seeing the child in difficulty, the others reportedly entered the pond in an attempt to save him. However, they also got into trouble in the deep water and drowned.
The incident shocked villagers and relatives who gathered at the spot after receiving information about the drowning.
Six Children Rescued From Pond
Villagers and relatives rushed to the pond and helped in the rescue operation. All six children were eventually taken out of the water.
They were immediately taken to a referral hospital for medical treatment. However, doctors examined the children and declared them dead.
The bodies were later sent for post-mortem examination, according to the doctor.
Five Victims From Same Area
Most of the children were residents of Vishnu Tola Ward No. 27. Rahul Kumar and Pooja Kumari were siblings.
Jyoti Kumari was the only victim who was not from Vishnu Tola. She was reportedly from Sabour and had been visiting relatives in the area.
The deaths have left families and local residents mourning the loss of six children during the festival.
Police and local authorities are expected to conduct further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
