An elderly man from Punjab who went missing during a pilgrimage to Amritsar ended up more than 1,200 kilometres away in Gaya, Bihar, after boarding the wrong train. With little information about his identity and only the name of his village to guide him, a stranger stepped in and eventually helped bring him back to his family.
The man, identified as Chaman Lal from Fatehgarh Gujran village in Ludhiana district, had travelled to Amritsar on September 11 to visit Sri Harmandir Sahib under the Punjab government’s Chief Minister Pilgrimage Scheme.
According to his family, Lal has memory-related difficulties. During the pilgrimage, he became separated from the group he was travelling with and eventually reached a railway station. He then boarded a train bound for Bihar, taking him far away from Punjab.
Elderly Man Found Hungry and Distressed in Gaya
Lal eventually reached Gaya, where a local resident named Neeraj found him in a distressed condition.
The elderly man could not clearly explain where he lived or provide his full address. He spoke Punjabi and repeatedly mentioned just one important detail — the name of his village, Fatehgarh Gujran.
Instead of leaving him at the railway station or simply arranging a meal, Neeraj took Lal to his home.
He and his family gave the elderly man food, a place to sleep and care for about four days while they tried to understand where he belonged.
Neeraj later said that when he saw the elderly man alone and in need of help, he felt he had to step in.
“He could not tell me his address. He could only remember the name of his village, Fatehgarh Gujran,” Neeraj said, according to a report carried by United News of India.
Three Days of Searching for One Village
With no phone number, address or other clear information, Neeraj began with the only clue he had — Fatehgarh Gujran.
He searched the internet and used ChatGPT to work out where the village was located. The search was not solved immediately. Neeraj reportedly spent around three days trying different searches before identifying Fatehgarh Gujran near Machhiwara Sahib in Ludhiana district.
“I kept searching for about three days. Once I found that the village was near Machhiwara, I decided to take him back myself,” Neeraj said.
That decision turned a search for a village into a long journey across states.
Stranger Refuses to Leave Him Alone
Once Neeraj had identified the likely location, he did not send Lal back on his own.
He travelled with him from Gaya to Ludhiana and then continued towards Machhiwara. After reaching the area, Neeraj began showing Lal’s photograph to local residents, hoping someone would recognise him.
The search finally produced a breakthrough when a local resident, Master Krishan Lal, recognised the elderly man.
Krishan Lal had seen Lal’s photograph after it was circulated on social media during the family’s search for him. He was able to connect Neeraj with the family.
Grandson Rushes to Bring Him Home
Chaman Lal’s grandson, Sukhchain Singh, then travelled to Machhiwara and confirmed that the elderly man was his missing grandfather.
For the family, the reunion brought an end to days of uncertainty.
Sukhchain said the family had searched for Lal in Amritsar and had also informed the police. Relatives and villagers had circulated his photographs on social media in the hope that someone would recognise him.
“I am extremely thankful to Neeraj for keeping my grandfather safe and bringing him back,” Sukhchain said, according to UNI.
Family Welcomes Neeraj With Gratitude
The reunion was not only about Chaman Lal returning home. It also brought together two families from different parts of the country who had never known each other before.
After Lal was safely reunited with his relatives, his family welcomed Neeraj and thanked him for the help he had given.
Reports said the family honoured him with garlands and gifts in appreciation of his efforts.
Neeraj, who works in the construction sector in Gaya, had no prior connection with Chaman Lal or his family. He simply chose to help an elderly stranger who was hungry, confused and far from home.
What began with one lost pilgrim, one remembered village name and a wrong train ended with Chaman Lal back among his family in Punjab.
In the end, it was not just an online search that helped solve the mystery. It was the decision of a stranger to take responsibility for a vulnerable man and stay with him until he found his way home.
