On the first day of the new year, Japan was jolted by a powerful earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale, triggering a series of tsunami waves that struck coastal areas across central Japan. The seismic event, occurring on Monday, January 1, led to a sequence of at least 21 subsequent earthquakes above 4.0 magnitude, prompting the issuance of widespread tsunami warnings.
Videos circulating on social media captured the unsettling moments as tsunami waves surged and hit Niigata and Ishikawa prefectures. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported the onslaught of waves, with heights reaching alarming levels in various regions. Wajima port in Ishikawa prefecture faced waves towering as high as 1.2 meters (four feet) at 4:21 pm local time. Toyama Prefecture experienced waves measuring 80 cm around 4:35 pm, while Kashiwazaki in Niigata Prefecture encountered waves reaching a staggering 40 meters at 4:36 pm local time. Niigata’s Sado Island was also affected, experiencing waves at 4:10 pm local time.
Social media videos depicted the sheer force of the waves breaching seawalls in Ishikawa prefecture and hitting cars in Niigata prefecture, capturing the raw intensity of the natural disaster.
In the wake of the earthquake’s impact, power disruptions affected several areas in Japan, leaving hundreds without electricity. Authorities swiftly initiated precautionary measures, urging residents to evacuate from vulnerable coastal zones in Ishikawa, Niigata, Toyama, and Yamagata prefectures, redirecting them to safer locations. Traffic authorities took decisive action, closing major highways near the earthquake’s epicenter to safeguard commuters.
Tsunami warnings rippled across Niigata, Toyama, Yamagata, Fukui, and Hyogo prefectures, extending along the Japan Sea Coast. Moreover, Russia responded to the seismic activity by declaring a tsunami threat along parts of Sakhalin’s western coast. Russian authorities urged residents to relocate to higher ground as a precautionary measure following the seismic disturbances originating from the earthquake in Japan.
The combined efforts of Japanese authorities and neighboring countries highlighted the collaborative response required in the face of such natural disasters.
