As hostilities between Iran and Israel intensify, hundreds of Indian students stranded in Iranian cities have begun posting urgent video messages online, appealing directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India for swift evacuation.
With air raid sirens, explosions and uncertainty disrupting daily life, students say fear and anxiety have gripped campuses across the country.
“Situation Is Getting Worse,” Says Student in Tehran
One Indian student currently in Tehran shared a video describing the situation as alarming and unpredictable.
The student said they are thankful that the Ministry of External Affairs is in discussions regarding safety measures, but stressed that quick action is crucial. “We don’t know what will happen next. Please don’t wait for the situation to get worse. Help us leave as soon as possible,” the appeal said.
Background sounds in the video suggested unrest and possible distant blasts, highlighting the tense environment.
Panic in Urmia and Other Cities
Another student, Mehek Hussain from Urmia University of Medical Sciences, said fear has spread among Indian students in her city as well.
She noted that strikes were reported in various parts of Iran, including Tehran and Urmia. While the Indian Embassy had earlier advised nationals to leave, she explained that many students were unable to do so due to academic restrictions.
“Our university did not permit us to leave in the middle of the term. We could not risk our careers,” she said, adding that some students have managed to return to India, but many remain stranded.
Exams Add to Anxiety
The tension has been worsened by upcoming examinations. Dr Momin Khan, President of the AIMSA association, said students are caught between their safety and their academic future.
According to him, exams scheduled for early March are preventing several students from departing. AIMSA has reportedly requested Iran’s Health Ministry to postpone the exams to allow safe travel.
Larger Indian Presence in Region
Meanwhile, Asaduddin Owaisi stated that nearly 50,000 Indian citizens are currently in Iran, with around 10,000 in Israel. Concerns are also rising about the wider Indian diaspora in Gulf nations.
Government Monitoring Situation
The Government of India has issued travel advisories and stated that it is closely tracking developments. However, students on the ground say uncertainty remains their biggest challenge.
