Pakistan Afghanistan airstrikes Operation Ghazab lil-Haq border conflict 2026

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have sharply intensified after Islamabad announced a major military offensive against the Taliban-led government in Kabul. The escalation follows a series of deadly border clashes that pushed relations between the two neighbours to a new low.

Pakistan confirmed it carried out overnight air operations targeting what it described as militant infrastructure inside Afghanistan. Explosions were reported in Kabul and Kandahar, with Afghan officials also citing strikes in Paktia province. The strikes came hours after Afghan forces allegedly opened fire on Pakistani border positions.

Pakistan Announces “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq”

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif declared that Islamabad had launched a military campaign named “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq.” He stated that Pakistan’s patience had run out and that decisive action was necessary to safeguard national security.

According to Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Afghan claims of capturing Pakistani military posts were “baseless.” He maintained that Pakistan targeted specific Taliban-linked military sites, including logistical bases and ammunition storage facilities.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi accused Afghan forces of endangering civilians and warned of severe consequences if further attacks occurred.

Kabul Hits Back With Counterclaims

Afghanistan’s Taliban administration, led by spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, confirmed the airstrikes and described them as aggression. Afghan defence officials claimed their forces launched retaliatory attacks on Pakistani border posts late Thursday night.

Kabul alleged that more than a dozen Pakistani positions were seized during the clashes and reported significant casualties among Pakistani troops. However, Islamabad rejected these claims and insisted only two of its soldiers were killed.

Casualty figures remain disputed, with Afghanistan claiming dozens of Pakistani troops were killed, while Pakistan said several Afghan fighters died in the exchange.

Civilians Caught in Crossfire at Torkham

Heavy fighting was also reported near the Torkham border crossing, a key transit point between the two nations. Afghan authorities said a mortar shell struck near a refugee settlement, injuring several civilians, including women.

Both sides have begun relocating villagers and refugees from areas close to the border amid fears of further escalation.

International Alarm Grows

The rising hostilities have drawn global concern. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged both countries to exercise restraint, protect civilians and resolve their disputes through dialogue.

Relations between the two countries have remained tense for months. Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) of operating from Afghan territory, a charge Kabul denies.

With military operations underway and both governments standing firm, observers fear the fragile peace along the border may collapse further, potentially destabilising the wider region.
