Bangladesh Gets New President: Who Is Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir And Why Was He Elected?

Bangladesh has elected veteran Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as its 23rd President, ending the vacancy in the country’s top constitutional post.

Alamgir defeated Oli Ahmed in a rare multi-candidate presidential election held in Bangladesh’s Parliament. He received 255 votes, while Ahmed secured 88 votes.

A total of 343 lawmakers took part in the voting, which was conducted between 2 pm and 5 pm local time under the supervision of Chief Election Commissioner ASM Nasir Uddin. The result was announced after voting ended.

Who Is Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir?

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is a senior BNP politician and a long-time figure in Bangladesh’s opposition politics.

Before entering the presidential race, he served as the BNP’s Secretary General and was also a member of the party’s National Standing Committee.

The BNP selected him as its presidential candidate last week. After receiving the nomination, Alamgir stepped down from his party positions so that he could contest the presidential election.

His election now moves him from a senior opposition role to the country’s highest constitutional office.

Who Did Alamgir Defeat?

Alamgir’s main challenger was Oli Ahmed, who was supported by an 11-party opposition alliance.

The alliance included groups led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party (NCP).

The final result gave Alamgir a comfortable majority:

  • Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir: 255 votes
  • Oli Ahmed: 88 votes
  • Total votes cast: 343

This was particularly significant because Bangladesh had not witnessed a presidential election with more than one candidate in around 35 years. Earlier elections were generally uncontested because opposition parties did not field candidates.

Why Was A New President Needed?

The election was held after Mohammad Shahabuddin stepped down as President on July 24.

Shahabuddin, who became Bangladesh’s 22nd President in April 2023, resigned after citing serious health problems.

Following his resignation, Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed temporarily assumed the President’s responsibilities in accordance with the country’s Constitution.

Bangladesh’s constitutional system requires Parliament to elect a new President within 90 days after the position becomes vacant.

The election of Alamgir therefore brings the temporary arrangement to an end.

What Happens Next?

With the result formally announced, Alamgir will take charge as Bangladesh’s new President.

His election is also politically significant because he comes from the BNP, making his move to the presidency an important development in Bangladesh’s changing political landscape.
