In a major political development, former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia have been acquitted in the much-debated Delhi excise policy case. The verdict was delivered by the Rouse Avenue Court, which ruled that there was no evidence to establish criminal conspiracy or wrongdoing in the framing of the policy.

The case had been investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation, following allegations that the 2021–22 excise policy was designed to favour certain private players. However, the court found that the prosecution failed to present solid proof linking the accused to any illegal activity.

Background of the Controversy

The Delhi excise policy was introduced with the aim of reforming the liquor trade in the national capital by increasing government revenue and reducing black marketing. The Aam Aadmi Party government had defended the policy as a transparent system that encouraged healthy competition.

However, opposition parties alleged that the policy created undue benefits for select distributors. The matter later escalated into a full-scale investigation, leading to arrests, questioning of top leaders, and multiple court hearings.

Court Observations on Conspiracy Claims

During the proceedings, the prosecution argued that there was an “overarching conspiracy” behind the policy changes. But the court stated clearly that no criminal intent could be proven. It noted that policy decisions, even if controversial, do not automatically amount to corruption unless backed by concrete evidence.

Special Judge Jitendra Singh observed that allegations alone were not enough and that the investigation did not establish financial wrongdoing or illegal coordination between officials and private entities.

Political Impact and Reactions

The verdict is expected to significantly impact Delhi’s political atmosphere. Supporters of Kejriwal and Sisodia described the judgment as a vindication after months of legal and political battles. Party leaders said the decision proves that the accusations were politically motivated.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders have indicated they will study the detailed court order before issuing a full response.
