India Pushes for Greater BRICS Coordination
India on Thursday underlined the growing importance of BRICS cooperation in addressing global instability, as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting held in the national capital.
Speaking during the high-level gathering, Jaishankar said the grouping has an important role to play in helping countries tackle challenges linked to energy availability, food security and healthcare systems amid a rapidly changing international environment.
BRICS Engagement Expanding Across Multiple Sectors
Highlighting India’s engagement as Chair, Jaishankar said the bloc has already conducted more than 80 meetings involving active participation from member nations. According to him, these discussions have helped deepen cooperation and strengthen dialogue across several strategic sectors.
He also stressed the importance of building a broader and more inclusive BRICS framework through engagement with partner countries.
The minister said smooth functioning of the grouping depends on all member states aligning with the collective understanding and consensus developed within BRICS on major international matters.
Global Conflicts and Economic Pressures Reshaping World Order
During his address, Jaishankar noted that the meeting was taking place at a time when international relations are undergoing significant shifts.
He pointed to ongoing geopolitical conflicts, economic volatility and disruptions in trade and technology as major developments influencing the global landscape. According to the minister, these evolving challenges are increasing expectations from developing and emerging economies for BRICS to contribute as a stabilising force.
Emerging Economies Looking Towards BRICS
Jaishankar said many countries in the Global South and emerging markets are increasingly looking at BRICS as a platform capable of promoting balance and cooperation in uncertain times.
He added that the discussions among foreign ministers provide an opportunity to assess regional and international developments while exploring ways to strengthen collaboration among member nations.
The BRICS grouping currently includes major emerging economies such as Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, alongside newly expanded members.
Focus on Stability and Multilateral Cooperation
The meeting comes amid rising global concerns over energy disruptions, inflationary pressure and supply chain uncertainties caused by ongoing geopolitical tensions in several regions.
India has consistently advocated for stronger multilateral cooperation through forums like BRICS, especially on issues affecting developing economies and global economic stability.
