Sambit Patra Raises Questions Over Rahul Gandhi’s Overseas Visits
A fresh political confrontation erupted between the BJP and Congress after senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sambit Patra accused Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi of spending massive amounts on foreign travel over the past two decades.
Addressing reporters in New Delhi, Patra alleged that Gandhi undertook dozens of international trips during the last 22 years and claimed the expenditure on those visits was significantly higher than his declared earnings during the same period.
BJP Seeks Clarification on Travel Funding
During the press briefing, the BJP spokesperson questioned the source of funding for Gandhi’s overseas travel expenses. Patra claimed that the Congress leader had visited several countries multiple times while holding elected office and argued that details related to the expenditure deserved public scrutiny.
He further alleged that Gandhi was often accompanied by multiple associates during these visits, increasing the overall cost of travel.
Patra claimed that available financial data showed a substantial difference between Gandhi’s reported income and the alleged spending on foreign tours over several financial years.
BJP Cites Income and Travel Expense Figures
The BJP leader presented a series of figures during the media interaction to support his allegations. According to Patra, Gandhi’s declared annual income in several years was considerably lower than the amount allegedly spent on international travel.
He cited examples from multiple financial years, claiming the expenditure on overseas visits crossed several crores despite comparatively lower declared earnings.
Patra argued that the issue raises questions related to financial transparency and compliance with legal and regulatory norms.
Asset Growth Also Comes Under Political Spotlight
The BJP spokesperson additionally referred to Rahul Gandhi’s election affidavits filed over the years. Patra claimed that Gandhi’s declared assets had increased sharply since his first Lok Sabha election.
According to the BJP leader, Gandhi had declared assets worth under Rs 1 crore during his initial parliamentary election campaign in 2004, while his latest affidavit for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections reportedly showed assets running into several crores.
Patra said the increase in wealth and the alleged expenditure on foreign travel warranted greater public explanation.
Congress Yet to Respond Officially
At the time of the political exchange, there was no immediate official response from the Congress party or Rahul Gandhi regarding the allegations made by the BJP spokesperson.
The remarks have added to the ongoing political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress ahead of key political developments and upcoming electoral battles.
With both parties frequently targeting each other on issues of transparency, finances and accountability, the latest allegations are expected to trigger sharp reactions in the national political arena.
