Maharashtra Home Minister Yogesh Kadam on Thursday said a detailed investigation has been ordered into the attack on Shiromani Akali Dal chief and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in Nanded.
Kadam said he had spoken to the Inspector General following the incident, while Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault. The alleged attacker has been arrested and is being questioned by police.
According to Kadam, the accused had been serving as a volunteer at the gurdwara for around two years. He allegedly used a sharp object during the attack, while a police officer sustained injuries while attempting to intervene and protect Badal.
Sukhbir Badal, security officer stable
Kadam said the injuries suffered by Badal and the injured security personnel were not serious and that both were out of danger.
“Both are in stable condition and out of danger. The Maharashtra Police will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, and the Nanded Police are also investigating at their level. Authorities will also probe whether there was a conspiracy behind the attack or if there is any other angle involved. Assistance from other investigative agencies will be sought if necessary,” Kadam said.
Both Badal and Inspector Santosh Kendre were admitted to Yasho Sai Hospital for treatment.
Fadnavis speaks to Badal, orders investigation
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also contacted Badal to enquire about his health following the attack. Sources said Fadnavis sought details from the Nanded Superintendent of Police and instructed officials to investigate the motive behind the assault.
Police said the accused has been identified as Jaspal Singh and that he was arrested following the incident.
According to the police account, Badal was attacked at Mata Sahib Gurdwara after offering prayers. The assault allegedly took place while he was coming down the stairs.
Inspector Santosh Kendre attempted to stop the attacker and was also injured during the intervention. Both Badal and Kendre suffered injuries to their hands.
Who is Jaspal Singh?
Police said Jaspal Singh is a Nihang who had been working as a volunteer at the gurdwara for approximately two years.
He was taken into custody following the assault, and further legal proceedings have been initiated. Police are now investigating what prompted the attack and whether any wider conspiracy or other angle was involved.
PM Modi enquires about Badal’s health
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also contacted Badal’s wife, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, by phone to enquire about his condition following the attack.
The investigation remains underway, with Maharashtra Police and Nanded Police examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
