“Don’t Need Lessons on Democracy”: Himanta Biswa Sarma Hits Back at Congress Over Allegations

A sharp political confrontation has broken out between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly countering criticism from senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi over remarks related to democratic conduct.

Responding publicly, Sarma rejected the criticism, asserting that he does not need guidance on democratic values or public discourse. He accused Congress leaders of shifting the focus from policy issues to personal attacks, intensifying the political standoff.

The dispute is linked to allegations raised earlier by Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, who questioned the financial and citizenship-related details of Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma. The Assam Chief Minister has categorically denied the claims, describing them as fabricated and politically motivated, and alleged that misleading documents were circulated to damage his credibility during the election period.

Taking a firm stance, Sarma said the controversy involves targeting a private individual with no political role, calling it an attempt to malign her reputation. He confirmed that a police complaint has been lodged and indicated that legal proceedings are underway.

The row gained further traction after the Supreme Court of India granted anticipatory bail to Khera in connection with the case involving allegations of forgery and defamation. Sarma also criticised Singhvi for commenting on the issue without direct engagement, describing it as an unfair approach.
