Bengal cricketer and Delhi Capitals player Abhishek Porel was arrested in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Tuesday following a complaint filed by a medical student alleging sexual assault and cheating on the promise of marriage.
The complaint was registered at Mogra Police Station after the woman accused Porel of having a physical relationship with her while allegedly assuring her that he would marry her. The allegations are currently being investigated by the police.
Medical Student Alleges Relationship And False Promise Of Marriage
According to the complaint, the woman claimed that she and Porel had been in a relationship for nearly three years and had discussed marriage.
She alleged that their relationship began to deteriorate around one-and-a-half years ago. The matter had reportedly reached the attention of police earlier, but a formal complaint was not lodged at that stage.
The latest complaint has now resulted in a criminal investigation and Porel’s arrest.
Calcutta High Court Had Ordered Immediate Arrest
The case took a serious turn after allegations that Porel had threatened to circulate intimate photographs and videos of the woman.
Following the allegations, the Calcutta High Court directed authorities to take immediate steps for his arrest. Police subsequently moved forward with the case and arrested the cricketer.
The court’s intervention came amid concerns over the alleged threat involving the woman’s private photographs and videos.
Police To Examine Electronic Devices
Police have registered the case under non-bailable provisions and said the investigation will also involve examination of electronic evidence.
As part of the probe, Porel is expected to surrender electronic devices and storage media that could be relevant to the allegations. Investigators are likely to examine digital communications and other material connected to the complaint.
The allegations against Porel are yet to be established in court, and the investigation is continuing.

Porel is a Bengal wicketkeeper-batter who has represented the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. The arrest comes as the allegations against him move into a formal legal investigation.
