The Supreme Court has issued notices on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking an investigation into the alleged commercial and social media exploitation of oral observations made by judges during court proceedings.
The petition raises concerns over the way remarks made inside courtrooms are allegedly being edited, repackaged and circulated online for political messaging, memes and viral content.
One of the instances cited in the plea relates to a May 15, 2026, observation by the Chief Justice, in which the word “cockroach” was reportedly used during proceedings. The petitioner has alleged that such courtroom remarks are being selectively edited and presented out of context on social media platforms.
Plea Seeks Probe Into Viral Court Remarks
According to the petition, oral observations made during hearings can sometimes be taken out of their original context and transformed into short clips or posts designed to attract attention or serve political purposes.
The plea has sought an investigation into the alleged commercial and social media use of such remarks and has also raised concerns over the circulation of manipulated or misleading courtroom content.
The petitioner has additionally sought a CBI investigation into allegations involving fake lawyers and individuals possessing fake law degrees.
Centre, MeitY, BCI And CBI Receive Notices
The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Bar Council of India (BCI) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the PIL.
The notices indicate that the court will seek responses from the concerned authorities before deciding the further course of proceedings.
The petition combines concerns surrounding the online circulation of judicial observations with allegations about fraudulent legal credentials, making it a significant matter concerning both the legal profession and digital platforms.
PIL To Be Heard On September 10
The Supreme Court has listed the matter for further hearing on September 10, 2026.
The upcoming hearing is expected to bring greater clarity on the allegations raised in the petition and the response of the Centre, MeitY, Bar Council of India and CBI.
