The Akali Dal Waris Punjab De (ADWPD) has made a politically significant start to its preparations for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections by naming Satwant Singh, son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi assassination convict Kehar Singh, as its first candidate.
Satwant Singh has been selected to contest from the Bassi Pathana Assembly constituency, with the party presenting the decision as part of its broader Panthic political agenda.
The choice has already triggered discussion in Punjab because of Satwant Singh’s family background. His father, Kehar Singh, was convicted in the conspiracy surrounding the assassination of Indira Gandhi and was subsequently executed.
Waris Punjab De Says Decision Reflects Panthic Politics
The candidate announcement was made by Tarsem Singh, father of jailed Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh. Explaining the decision, Tarsem Singh said the party’s political objectives went beyond simply winning elections.“The politics of Akali Dal Waris Punjab is not limited to attaining power. It is committed to upholding Panthic principles, Punjab’s rights and the honour of families that have made sacrifices for the community.”
He also rejected suggestions that the party had ignored families associated with sacrifices for the Panth.“Today, Akali Dal Waris Punjab has rejected this perception from the outset by announcing its first candidate from a martyr family,” he said.
Tarsem Singh further argued that recognising such families should involve political representation rather than remaining limited to public statements.“The respect accorded to martyr families is not limited to statements; they are also being given their due place in the party’s responsibilities,” he added.
Satwant Singh’s Entry Puts Bassi Pathana In Focus
The announcement comes as Punjab’s political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 Assembly battle.
Bassi Pathana could now become a constituency to watch closely, particularly because Satwant Singh’s candidature combines electoral politics with a highly contentious historical legacy.
For ADWPD supporters, the decision could strengthen the party’s appeal among sections of the Panthic electorate. At the same time, opponents are likely to focus on Kehar Singh’s conviction and his association with the assassination case involving Indira Gandhi.
The political impact of the candidature will therefore depend on whether the party can turn its Panthic messaging into electoral support at the constituency level.
Punjab Poll Battle Set To Heat Up
The 2027 Punjab Assembly election is expected to witness a multi-cornered contest as political parties prepare to challenge the ruling Aam Aadmi Party.
In the 2022 Assembly election, AAP won 92 of Punjab’s 117 seats, while the Congress secured 18 seats.
With ADWPD now announcing its first candidate, the party has signalled that it intends to enter the electoral contest with a distinct political identity centred on Panthic principles, Punjab’s rights and the representation of families it describes as having made sacrifices for the community.
Satwant Singh’s candidature is likely to remain under close scrutiny as campaigning for the 2027 Punjab elections gathers momentum.
