The Monsoon Session of Parliament has entered another day of confrontation, with protests by the ruling NDA adding a new dimension to the continuing deadlock between the government and the Opposition.
The latest flashpoint was the police action against student protesters in Jharkhand, where BJP and other NDA MPs staged a demonstration outside Parliament and demanded that Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi respond to the issue.
The Opposition has been protesting in Parliament since the beginning of the session, primarily demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the police action during a protest in Delhi on July 20. The demonstrations have also covered issues including alleged irregularities in NEET and the alleged misappropriation of donations at the Shri Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
However, the government’s counter-protest on Tuesday shifted the political spotlight towards Jharkhand.
NDA MPs target Rahul Gandhi over Jharkhand police action
Several NDA lawmakers gathered near Parliament’s Makar Dwar carrying placards targeting Rahul Gandhi. One of the slogans read, “Grah Mantri ki Charcha se Rahul Gandhi bhago mat”, accusing the Congress leader of avoiding a discussion involving the Home Minister.
BJP MPs also raised the issue of the alleged police crackdown on students in Ranchi. The protesters demanded that Gandhi respond to the use of force against students during their march towards the Jharkhand Assembly.
Another placard carried the message, “Jharkhand mei chatro pe lathi charge pe Rahul Gandhi jawab do”, calling upon the Congress leader to explain his position on the incident.
BJP MP Anurag Thakur also questioned Gandhi’s stand on the Ranchi protests. “Rahul Gandhi will have to speak on the police brutality against students in Jharkhand,” Thakur said.
The BJP has sought to turn the Jharkhand incident into a larger political issue, particularly because the state government is headed by Chief Minister Hemant Soren and includes the Congress as an alliance partner.
Opposition protests have kept Parliament tense
The current Parliament standoff began with Opposition protests over the police action against demonstrators in Central Delhi. Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders have repeatedly demanded that Amit Shah address the House and explain the circumstances surrounding the police response.
The Opposition’s protests later expanded to other issues, including NEET-related concerns and allegations surrounding donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
During one demonstration, Opposition MPs staged a symbolic skit involving donation boxes to highlight their allegations regarding the handling of temple donations. The protest subsequently became another political flashpoint, with a police case also being reported against some of the leaders involved.
With repeated demonstrations, slogans and adjournments, normal parliamentary proceedings have remained under pressure despite the passage of several bills in both Houses.
Government says Amit Shah is ready for discussion
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has maintained that the government is prepared to discuss the student protest issue.
Rijiju had said the Home Minister would not merely make a statement but would also respond to points raised by Opposition MPs during the debate. The government has therefore accused the Opposition of creating disruptions instead of participating in a discussion.
The Opposition, however, continues to insist on accountability over the police action before moving ahead.
The latest NDA protest indicates that the confrontation is no longer limited to the government’s response to Opposition demands. The ruling alliance is now using the Jharkhand student protests to put pressure on Rahul Gandhi and the Congress.
As Parliament’s Monsoon Session continues, the competing protests are expected to keep the political temperature high, with both sides accusing the other of avoiding genuine debate.
