Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain for raising an objection after spotting an allegedly incorrect depiction of India at a restaurant in Glasgow during the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Borgohain, who secured the gold medal in the women’s 75kg boxing category, reportedly noticed the map while visiting the restaurant with members of the Indian boxing contingent for a celebratory dinner. The issue later gained traction on social media.
PM Modi Asks Lovlina About Restaurant Incident
During a meeting with the boxer at his Lok Kalyan Marg residence, PM Modi referred to the incident in a light-hearted exchange.
“Kya hua wo restaurant waale se jhagda kar rahi thi? (What happened, you were fighting with that restaurant guy?)” Modi asked Lovlina.
The Prime Minister then praised her for noticing the disputed map despite the celebratory atmosphere surrounding India’s performance at the Games.
He also complimented a video related to the incident, saying: “Main sach batata hu, ye video saamanya nahi hai aapka. Lambe samay tak logon ko yaad rehga [I’m telling you the truth—this video of yours is extraordinary. People will remember it for a long time].”
Lovlina Objects To India Map Depiction
According to the account shared about the incident, Borgohain noticed a map displayed on the restaurant’s menu that she believed incorrectly represented India, with the Northeast shown separately from the rest of the country.
The boxer objected to the depiction, drawing attention to the importance of accurately representing India’s geographical boundaries.
The episode subsequently spread across social media, with the restaurant facing criticism over the map.
Restaurant Issues Apology
The Glasgow restaurant, Mister Singh’s India, later issued an apology for the disputed depiction and said it would make changes to its logo.
The controversy emerged during a celebratory period for Indian boxing at the Commonwealth Games, where the country reportedly won 10 medals in boxing.
Borgohain’s decision to raise the issue despite being in Glasgow for celebrations has now earned praise from the Prime Minister, who highlighted her attentiveness and willingness to speak up.
