Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing the party of disrespecting Dr B R Ambedkar—India’s foremost social reformer and the architect of the Constitution. Addressing a gathering in Lucknow during the ‘Bharat Ratna Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Samman Samaroh’, Adityanath claimed that the Congress deliberately obstructed the honour Dr Ambedkar deserved, even in death.
“First they made Babasaheb Ambedkar lose the elections. After his ‘mahaparinirvaan’, they did not allow his last rites to be performed in Delhi. The Congress also did not allow his memorial to come up,” said the Chief Minister, taking direct aim at the grand old party.
Highlighting historical grievances, Adityanath further alleged that in 1976, the Congress-led government inserted a word in the Constitution that Babasaheb himself had opposed during his lifetime.
“In 1976, they brought an amendment in the Constitution and inserted a word against which Babasaheb had himself given arguments,” he said, referencing the controversial inclusion of the word “socialist” in the Preamble through the 42nd Amendment.
Dr Ambedkar passed away on December 6, 1956, at his residence in Delhi. However, his last rites, performed according to Buddhist traditions, were carried out at Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai—a site that has since become a revered pilgrimage location for his followers.
