New Delhi: A political firestorm erupted on Sunday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took sharp aim at Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, accusing him of belittling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) founder Kanshi Ram and disrespecting the Dalit community. The row was triggered by Yadav’s recent comments suggesting that Kanshi Ram’s early political success was largely due to the support of Mulayam Singh Yadav and the socialist movement.

BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya took to platform X (formerly Twitter) to condemn Akhilesh’s statement, calling it a deliberate attempt to overshadow Kanshi Ram’s contributions in order to glorify SP patriarch Mulayam Singh.

“Akhilesh Yadav first insulted the Kshatriya community by supporting the statement of an SP MP who called Rana Sanga a traitor. Now he is mocking the Dalit community’s guide, Kanshi Ram, only to make him look smaller than Mulayam Singh,” Malviya wrote.

He further added,”Now it seems that you have started smelling foul smell from every section of Hindu society. There is no cure for this disease called ‘secularism.'”

The controversy stems from a recent speech where Akhilesh Yadav remarked: “It is recorded in history that at that time, if anyone had helped the founder of the party, Kanshi Ram, to win, then it was Netaji (Mulayam Singh Yadav) and the socialist people who had helped him get to the Lok Sabha.” He also noted that Kanshi Ram had struggled to secure a parliamentary seat before that support.

Kanshi Ram, a towering figure in Indian politics, founded the BSP in 1984 with the mission to uplift Dalits and marginalised communities. His election to the Lok Sabha from Etawah in 1991, under an SP-BSP alliance, marked a turning point in Dalit politics.
