RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday urged society and policymakers to engage constructively with young people raising public issues, saying protests by the younger generation should not automatically be viewed as anti-national. Addressing a gathering of students in Mumbai, Bhagwat stressed that democratic dialogue remains the most effective way to resolve grievances and strengthen institutions.
Youth Voices Should Be Heard, Says Bhagwat
Speaking at the International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) Annual Championship Conference at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC), Bhagwat interacted with more than 2,000 students from over 100 cities. The event, held to mark IIMUN’s 15th anniversary, focused on the role of young people in shaping a more united world.
During his address, Bhagwat said that when young citizens take to democratic means to express their concerns, their intentions should be understood rather than dismissed. He noted that the country’s future depends on listening to the aspirations and anxieties of its next generation.
Democratic Protest Is Part Of Nation Building
Referring to the importance of democratic participation, Bhagwat said disagreement and peaceful protest are legitimate components of a healthy democracy. According to him, discussions should always be the first course of action, but if concerns remain unresolved, citizens have the democratic right to express dissent in a peaceful manner.
He emphasised that public movements should aim to improve governance and institutions instead of creating social divisions, adding that constructive engagement is essential for long-term solutions.
Young Indians Expect Reason, Not Blind Acceptance
Highlighting changing generational attitudes, Bhagwat observed that today’s youth are more questioning and analytical than previous generations. He said Gen Z and Gen Alpha expect logical explanations from leaders and institutions rather than unquestioned obedience.
He linked this approach to India’s long-standing tradition of intellectual debate, saying healthy discussions and the exchange of ideas help societies move closer to truth and better decision-making.
Call For Greater Engagement With The Younger Generation
Bhagwat concluded by urging governments, institutions and society to recognise that youth-led movements often emerge from genuine public concerns. He said sustained dialogue, transparency and responsiveness are key to maintaining trust between citizens and institutions, especially as young Indians play an increasingly influential role in shaping the country’s future.
