Kejriwal Claims Instagram Account Is Unavailable in India
A fresh political controversy has erupted after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal alleged that Meta has restricted access to his Instagram account in India without providing any explanation. The former Delhi Chief Minister claimed he learned about the restriction after contacting the company’s India office and later shared screenshots on social media to support his claim.
According to Kejriwal, the backend of his Instagram account displayed a message stating that the account was “unavailable in some locations,” which he claimed referred to India.
Says Meta Failed to Explain Restriction
In a post on X, Kejriwal said repeated attempts to seek clarification from Meta had not yielded any meaningful response.”Verbal enquiries at your India office revealed that my account has been restricted in India and is unavailable in India.”
He further alleged that the company neither informed him of the reason behind the restriction nor explained how the issue could be resolved.”All emails written have elicited no response other than routine acknowledgement.”
Kejriwal Targets Prime Minister Modi
Escalating his criticism, Kejriwal accused Meta of acting under political pressure and took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”Don’t bow down to our Prime Minister so much. Else he will allow u to run only his own account in India.”
As of the time of publishing, Meta had not issued any public statement responding to Kejriwal’s allegations.
Row Comes Amid Meta’s Ongoing Scrutiny in India
The latest allegation comes at a time when Meta is already under intense scrutiny from Indian authorities. The company’s senior global executives recently held discussions with government officials over concerns related to content moderation, AI-generated deepfakes and child safety on its platforms.
During those meetings, Meta reportedly apologised for operational lapses, including the temporary restriction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook video that addressed Gen Z and the government’s action against paper leaks. The video was later restored after the company described the incident as a technical error.
With Kejriwal now alleging restrictions on his own Instagram account, the debate over social media moderation, transparency and platform accountability is expected to intensify further.
