New Delhi: On the solemn occasion of the 105th anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday honoured the memory of the hundreds of unarmed civilians who were brutally killed by British forces in 1919. Remembering the victims, she said that a grateful nation will forever remain indebted to the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives for India’s freedom.
The tragic incident occurred on April 13, 1919, when thousands had gathered peacefully at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar to protest against the draconian Rowlatt Act—a colonial law that gave sweeping powers to the British regime. Without any warning, British troops under General Dyer opened fire on the crowd, killing and injuring hundreds in a span of minutes, leaving behind one of the darkest chapters in India’s colonial history.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), President Murmu expressed her heartfelt homage in Hindi:
“I pay my respectful tribute to all the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for mother India in Jallianwala Bagh. Their sacrifices made our freedom struggle stronger. A grateful India will always remain indebted to them.”
She further added, “I am confident that taking inspiration from those immortal martyrs, all countrymen would continue to contribute to the progress of India wholeheartedly.”
