“Voice of the Tribals Falls Silent”: PM Modi, Rajnath Singh Mourn Death of Shibu Soren

New Delhi: Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum on Monday following the demise of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder and veteran tribal leader Shibu Soren. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh led the nation in expressing grief, hailing Soren as a stalwart who dedicated his life to the upliftment of tribal and marginalised communities.

Prime Minister Modi took to social media platform X to pay homage to the 81-year-old leader, writing:
“Shibu Soren Ji was a grassroots leader who rose through the ranks of public life with unwavering dedication to the people. He was particularly passionate about empowering tribal communities, the poor and downtrodden. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Spoke to Jharkhand CM Shri Hemant Soren Ji and expressed condolences. Om Shanti.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also shared his heartfelt condolences, stating:
“The former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and one of the country’s senior-most leaders, Shri Shibu Soren ji, was counted among the towering leaders of Jharkhand who struggled throughout their lives for the rights and empowerment of the weaker sections of society, especially the tribal community. He always remained connected to the land and the people. I had a long acquaintance with him. His passing has caused me great sorrow. My condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti!”

Soren, who passed away in Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital after a prolonged illness, had been a key figure in tribal politics and played a pivotal role in the movement for the creation of Jharkhand. Affectionately known as “Dishom Guru,” he was instrumental in giving a political voice to tribal aspirations in eastern India.

A three-time Chief Minister and long-serving parliamentarian, Soren’s legacy spans decades of political activism rooted in social justice and indigenous rights.
