Umar Khalid Gets 14-Day Interim Bail to Attend Sister’s Wedding, Delhi Court Sets Strict Conditions

Delhi: A Delhi court on Thursday granted a short-term release to activist and former JNU scholar Umar Khalid, allowing him to attend his sister’s wedding later this month. The special order, issued by the Karkardooma Courts, permits Khalid to remain out on interim bail for 14 days—from December 16 to December 29.

The court said it was extending limited relief solely on humanitarian grounds, noting that the ceremony involves Khalid’s immediate family. He has been lodged in jail since September 2020 in the case linked to the alleged wider conspiracy surrounding the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots—charges that he has consistently rejected.

Under the order, Khalid must furnish a personal bond of ₹20,000 along with two sureties of the same amount. The court attached several restrictions, making it clear that the interim release cannot be misused in any manner.

During the bail period, Khalid is prohibited from contacting witnesses, co-accused, or anyone connected to the case. He must share his mobile number with the investigating officer, keep the phone switched on, and remain traceable at all times. The court also barred him from making social media posts or public statements.

The ruling further specifies that Khalid may only visit his home or venues associated with his sister’s wedding and must surrender back to jail authorities by the evening of December 29, after which the jail superintendent will submit a compliance report.
