After days of scorching heat and uncomfortable humidity, Mumbai finally witnessed rainfall on Sunday morning, bringing much-needed relief to residents who had been eagerly waiting for the monsoon to arrive. The showers, although light, marked a welcome change in weather conditions and offered hope that the southwest monsoon is now moving closer to the city.
Several parts of Mumbai recorded light rainfall during the early morning hours. Areas including Mulund, Bhandup, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Prabhadevi and Byculla experienced brief showers, while many residents woke up to cloudy skies and cooler temperatures. The rain helped ease the discomfort caused by the prolonged dry spell that had continued for several days.
Delayed Monsoon Keeps Mumbaikars Waiting
The southwest monsoon was originally expected to reach Mumbai around June 10 or June 11. However, its progress slowed significantly after advancing along the western coast earlier this month. The delay left residents dealing with rising temperatures and sticky weather conditions, increasing anticipation for the season’s arrival.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), weather conditions are gradually becoming favourable for the monsoon to advance further into Maharashtra around June 23. The department has indicated that Mumbai could see increased rainfall activity over the coming days as the monsoon strengthens across the region.
More Rainfall Likely In Coming Days
The IMD has forecast partly cloudy skies for Mumbai, along with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers during the day. Temperatures are expected to remain between 29 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius, while the morning temperature was recorded at around 26 degrees Celsius.
Weather officials have also predicted that rainfall activity over Konkan and Goa is likely to become more widespread between June 22 and June 25. Some locations in the region may experience heavy rainfall on June 23 and June 24, indicating that the monsoon is likely to gain momentum soon.
Air Quality Remains Healthy Across Mumbai
Even as the city awaits the full arrival of the monsoon, Mumbai’s air quality has remained in a healthy range. The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 26 during the early hours of Sunday, placing it in the “good” category.
Most parts of the city reported clean air conditions. Localities such as Andheri East, Gamdevi, Ghatkopar, Jogeshwari and Santacruz recorded particularly low AQI levels. While a few areas saw slightly higher pollution readings, overall air quality across Mumbai remained stable and favourable.
