Mumbai: IPL founder Lalit Modi has once again landed in controversy after posting a video from liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s birthday celebration, where both men appeared to mock their fugitive status, triggering sharp reactions across social media in India.

In the widely circulated clip, Lalit Modi is heard jokingly referring to himself and Mallya as the “two biggest fugitives,” a remark that many online users interpreted as a direct taunt at Indian authorities. The post was accompanied by a caption suggesting an intent to “break the internet” in India, further fuelling criticism.

The video went viral within hours, amassing over a million views in a single day. Netizens reacted strongly, with several accusing the duo of trivialising serious financial crimes. Many users expressed anger, calling the video an insult to the Indian legal system and taxpayers, while others described the moment as a reflection of how economic offenders continue to live comfortably abroad.

Some social media users, however, struck a contrasting tone, arguing that both men had been turned into political scapegoats despite having repaid significant amounts. These divided reactions highlighted the deep public frustration surrounding high-profile economic offences and delayed extradition processes.

Vijay Mallya, who left India in 2016, was later declared a Fugitive Economic Offender under anti-money laundering laws. He faces multiple charges linked to bank loan defaults and financial irregularities. Lalit Modi, who has been living overseas since 2010, continues to face investigations related to financial misconduct and alleged irregularities during his tenure as IPL chief.
