The Gujarat High Court has granted conditional bail to law student Rakshit Chaurasiya, the prime accused in the fatal Vadodara car crash that claimed one life and left several others injured earlier this year. The relief comes nearly nine months after the late-night accident shook the city and sparked widespread public outrage.

The order was passed by Justice N.S. Kariel, who allowed bail subject to specific conditions. Chaurasiya had been taken into custody shortly after the incident in March and has remained in judicial custody since then.

The crash occurred near a busy junction in Vadodara during the early hours, when a car carrying three friends lost control and rammed into pedestrians. One person died on the spot, while seven others sustained injuries. The vehicle involved was registered in the name of the father of one of the co-accused, who was also present in the car at the time.

During the hearing, Chaurasiya’s legal team argued that he had no prior criminal record and posed no flight risk. The defence also pointed out that another accused in the same case had already been granted bail by a lower court, raising questions over parity in arrests.

The prosecution opposed bail, citing Chaurasiya’s alleged conduct immediately after the crash and highlighting the seriousness of the charges. The state also informed the court that an additional case under narcotics law had been registered against him following the incident.

The accident had drawn intense attention after videos surfaced online showing the accused behaving erratically at the scene, triggering public anger and debate over reckless driving, substance abuse, and accountability.
