ABVP seeks immediate resolution of uncertainty in three-year LL.B. admissions; urges coordination among Maharashtra Government, BCI, CET Cell, universities and law colleges
Mumbai : The uncertainty surrounding admissions to the three-year LL.B. programme for the academic year 2026–27 in Maharashtra has raised concerns among thousands of law aspirants, with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) demanding immediate intervention by the State Government.
Students have already appeared for the CET examination and completed the necessary formalities for participating in the admission process. However, delays concerning the recognition and renewal of recognition of certain law colleges have created uncertainty over their admission options and academic future, ABVP said.
According to the student organisation, recognition and renewal of recognition of law colleges are administrative matters involving the respective institutions, the Bar Council of India (BCI) and other competent authorities. However, students should not be made to bear the consequences of delays arising from these procedures.
ABVP said students have appeared for the examination, entered the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) and are required to select colleges according to their preferences. At this crucial stage, uncertainty over the recognition status of some institutions has created confusion among aspirants.
The organisation said students require clear information on which colleges are currently eligible for admissions, which institutions have recognition-related matters pending and which colleges may be included in subsequent CAP rounds.
It has also raised the question of how students who have already submitted their preference lists would receive an equal opportunity if additional colleges are brought into the admission process at a later stage.
At present, colleges that have obtained the necessary approvals are being included by the CET Cell in the admission process, while some other institutions may become eligible for inclusion in subsequent CAP rounds.
ABVP has demanded that if new colleges are added later, students who have already submitted their preferences should be allowed to modify their choices. It said transparency and equal opportunity must be maintained throughout the admission process.
ABVP Seeks Review of Short-Term Recognition System
ABVP has also called for a review of the system governing the duration of recognition granted to law colleges by the Bar Council of India.
The organisation said colleges that consistently fulfil prescribed academic, infrastructural and other applicable requirements could be considered for a more stable, long-term recognition framework instead of being repeatedly subjected to short-duration recognition and renewal procedures.
According to ABVP, repeated recognition and renewal exercises can result in administrative delays that ultimately affect admissions and students’ academic prospects.
It has therefore sought a more stable, transparent and student-centric mechanism governing the recognition process.
ABVP’s Key Demands
ABVP Maharashtra has placed six demands before the State Government and the authorities concerned:
- Extend the first round of the LL.B. CAP admission process so that students are not disadvantaged while pending recognition-related issues are being resolved.
- The Maharashtra Government should intervene immediately to facilitate an early resolution of pending recognition and renewal issues involving law colleges and the Bar Council of India.
- Ensure coordination among the CET Cell, Department of Higher and Technical Education, BCI, concerned universities and law colleges and arrive at a clear and time-bound decision in the interest of students.
- Provide transparent and updated information identifying colleges eligible for admissions as well as institutions where recognition-related processes remain pending.
- Allow students to revise their preferences if additional colleges are included in the CAP process after completing recognition formalities.
- Develop a long-term and stable framework to make the recognition and renewal process for law colleges more transparent, predictable and student-friendly.
‘Why Should Students Pay the Price for Administrative Delays?’
ABVP Mumbai Mahanagar Minister Abhishek Pawar said students pursuing legal education should not be left uncertain because of administrative delays between institutions and regulatory authorities.
“Students pursuing legal education are the future pillars of the country’s justice system. They have appeared for the CET examination and completed the necessary formalities for admission. In such a situation, it is not appropriate to leave them uncertain about their future because of delays in administrative procedures concerning recognition between law colleges and the Bar Council of India. Why should students pay the price for delays at the administrative level?”
Pawar said the State Government should treat the issue as one affecting the academic future of students rather than merely as an administrative matter.
“Effective coordination must be established among the concerned law colleges, BCI, CET Cell, universities and the Department of Higher and Technical Education, and a time-bound solution must be arrived at. It must be ensured that students do not lose an academic year and that no student suffers injustice in the admission process. This should be the Government’s priority.”
ABVP reiterated that recognition-related administrative issues should be resolved at the earliest and that students’ academic prospects should not be left dependent on prolonged administrative uncertainty.
