Washington D.C: In a dramatic announcement that could escalate economic tensions, US President Donald Trump declared on Tuesday that the United States will impose a 25% tariff on all goods imported from India, effective August 1.
The move was confirmed through a lengthy and sharply worded post on Trump’s social media platform Truth Social, where he criticized India for maintaining “high tariffs,” “obnoxious trade barriers,” and continuing strategic ties with Russia, particularly in the energy and defense sectors.

“Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World…” Trump wrote.
He went on to accuse India of purchasing the “vast majority” of its military equipment from Russia and being one of the largest energy buyers from Moscow, alongside China, at a time when, in his words, “everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE.”
“All things not good!” Trump added, before announcing the imposition of a 25% tariff, along with an unspecified penalty for India’s continued engagement with Russia.
“INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST 1st. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!” he concluded.
