“India Needed No Mediator”: Jaishankar Rejects Foreign Role in Operation Sindoor Ceasefire, Lays Out Detailed Timeline

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Wednesday firmly dismissed claims of foreign mediation in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, stating that India’s response to Pakistan’s aggression was “resolute, measured, and entirely self-driven.”

Speaking during the Monsoon Session in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar provided a detailed timeline leading up to the ceasefire, countering opposition allegations and public speculation, particularly those stemming from claims made by former US President Donald Trump and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.

According to the Minister, the sequence began on May 9, when US Vice President JD Vance made an urgent phone call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, warning of an imminent large-scale Pakistani assault.

“The Prime Minister responded firmly, saying that if Pakistan chooses to act, India will respond appropriately and decisively,” Jaishankar told the House.

Following this, Pakistan initiated an attack that was swiftly and strategically countered by India. Jaishankar confirmed that India targeted and disabled Pakistani air defence systems within hours, showcasing military precision and preparedness.

Only after India’s retaliatory action did India begin receiving diplomatic messages from various nations, indicating that Pakistan was seeking to de-escalate, the minister said.

No Trump Mediation, Says India
Jaishankar categorically rejected Rahul Gandhi’s claim that Donald Trump played a role in facilitating the ceasefire.

“Between April 22 and June 16, there was not a single phone call between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi,” Jaishankar asserted.

He clarified that while India remained in contact with international partners like Saudi Arabia, the Indian government refused all suggestions of third-party intervention.

“We conveyed clearly that if the fighting is to stop, it must come as a formal request from Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO)—and that is exactly what happened,” he added.

Jaishankar also denied the existence of any backchannel diplomacy, stating that all communication was military-to-military and official, with no intermediaries or secret deals involved.

Trump’s Public Claims Contradicted
Jaishankar’s remarks directly contradict Donald Trump’s posts on Truth Social, where the former US President claimed to have “mediated a long night of talks” between India and Pakistan. A subsequent video address by Trump also mentioned a brokered ceasefire, which has now been officially denied by the Indian government.

“India acted independently. There was no foreign hand, no backdoor talks. Our diplomacy and military stood firm,” Jaishankar concluded.
