Chief Minister Resigns After Election Setback
Following a major electoral setback in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin submitted his resignation to Governor R. N. Ravi (Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar). The resignation was accepted, with the Governor asking him to continue in a caretaker capacity until a new government is formally constituted.
TVK Emerges as Leading Force in New Political Shift
The election results marked a significant political change in the state, with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor Vijay, emerging as the single largest party with 108 seats. Although short of the majority mark of 118, the party is expected to form the government with support from allies, including the Congress.
DMK and AIADMK Trail Behind
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which was in power, finished a distant second with 59 seats. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam secured 47 seats, while smaller parties such as the Congress and PMK registered limited victories with five and four seats respectively.
Personal Setback for Stalin in Constituency Battle
Adding to the party’s defeat, M. K. Stalin also lost his own electoral contest. He was defeated by TVK candidate V. S. Babu by a margin of 8,795 votes, marking a significant personal setback for the outgoing Chief Minister.
Government Formation Process Underway
With no party crossing the majority mark on its own, political negotiations are expected to play a key role in the coming days. TVK’s position as the largest party gives it a clear advantage in forming the next government, potentially reshaping Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
