Tamil Nadu Ammonia Gas Leak Turns Deadly: 2 Workers Killed, Dozens Hospitalised as Factory Owner Detained

An ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export unit in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district claimed the lives of at least two migrant workers and left more than 46 others requiring medical treatment on Saturday, triggering a massive emergency response and a government-ordered investigation.

The accident took place at a shrimp processing facility in Kannigaipair near Periyapalayam when ammonia escaped from a measuring valve inside the plant. Workers suddenly began experiencing severe breathing problems, dizziness and vomiting, forcing authorities to rush them to nearby hospitals. Officials said five of the injured remain in critical condition and may be shifted to specialised medical centres in Chennai for advanced care.

Rescue teams quickly reached the factory and launched evacuation operations to prevent further casualties. A 30-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team from Chennai, equipped with gas detection instruments and specialised rescue equipment, assisted local authorities in securing the area and moving workers to safety.

The incident prompted an immediate response from the Tamil Nadu government. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin directed officials to take strict action against those found responsible for the safety lapse, while senior state representatives, including IT Minister R. Kumar, District Collector S. Kavitha and Superintendent of Police Sai Praneeth, visited the site to review rescue efforts and monitor the condition of the injured.

To determine the cause of the leak, the state has formed a three-member high-level committee consisting of senior officials from the industrial safety, pollution control and public health departments. The panel has been instructed to submit a preliminary report within 24 hours and a comprehensive report within three days.

Police have also initiated legal proceedings by registering an FIR in the case, and the owner of the seafood processing facility has been detained for questioning as investigators examine whether negligence contributed to the tragedy.

Governor Rajendra Arlekar expressed grief over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families of the victims, while also wishing a speedy recovery to those undergoing treatment.
