Shrikant Shinde-Led Delegation Reaches Sierra Leone to Strengthen Global Ties, Highlights India’s Anti-Terror Stance

Freetown: In a significant step under India’s global outreach programme to counter terrorism and bolster international cooperation, Group 4 of the multi-party Indian delegation, led by Shiv Sena MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde, has arrived in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The team was warmly welcomed by Baisnab Charan Pradhan, India’s High Commissioner to Sierra Leone.

Taking to social media, the Indian High Commission in South Africa posted on X, “Pursuing India’s renewed commitment to counterterrorism and regional stability, an All-party delegation led by @DrSEShinde arrived at Freetown.”

The delegation had earlier transited through Lomé, Togo, on Wednesday, where they held strategic discussions focused on Pakistan-based terrorism and India’s recent military response, Operation Sindoor, following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 that claimed 26 civilian lives.

Former Indian Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sujan Chinoy, who is also part of the delegation, emphasized the growing depth of India-Sierra Leone relations. Speaking to ANI, he noted, “Relations between India and Sierra Leone are very good. We opened an embassy in Sierra Leone in 2020, though our diplomatic ties go back to 1961. It is a significant partner, currently serving as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.”

Chinoy pointed out that bilateral trade between the two nations is estimated at USD 80–100 million, with immense potential for growth. “Sierra Leone is rich in minerals. We should encourage Indian mining companies to explore opportunities here. Additionally, we’ve extended nearly USD 250 million in lines of credit and run robust ITEC and ICCR scholarship programs for capacity building,” he added.

The multi-party delegation includes several prominent leaders such as BJP’s Bansuri Swaraj, Atul Garg, Manan Kumar Mishra, IUML’s ET Mohammed Basheer, BJD’s Sasmit Patra, BJP veteran SS Ahluwalia, and Chinoy himself.

Their visit comes at a crucial time as India seeks to dispel global misinformation and assert its zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism on the world stage. The delegation is expected to hold meetings with local leadership and regional organizations, underscoring India’s commitment to regional security and developmental partnerships.
