PM Modi Skips Sikkim Visit Due to Inclement Weather, Delivers Speech from Air Force Base

Bagdogra: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to connectivity and development in the Northeast, stating that Sikkim remains a symbol of national pride and democratic strength. The Prime Minister made these remarks during a virtual address on Sikkim’s 50th Statehood Day, after his scheduled visit to the state was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Speaking from the Air Force base in Bagdogra, West Bengal, PM Modi said, “Connectivity is the main focus of our government. The Sevoke-Rangpo rail project will soon link Sikkim with the national rail network, transforming the region’s accessibility and economic potential.”

Hailing the spirit of Sikkim, Modi added, “Sikkim is the pride of the nation. Its people are deeply rooted in democratic values and have set an example for the entire country.”

The Prime Minister also commended the state’s achievement in organic farming, noting, “Sikkim is increasing its organic exports — a big achievement for the state. It is not only helping the local economy but also strengthening India’s image as a sustainable agricultural leader.”

Modi was originally scheduled to land at the Liping helipad in Gangtok and attend the statehood celebrations at Paljor Stadium. However, due to poor weather, the visit was converted into a virtual interaction.

During the event, PM Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several key infrastructure projects, including:

A 500-bedded district hospital in Namchi, constructed at a cost of over ₹750 crore.

A passenger ropeway in Gyalshing district to boost tourism and local mobility.

A statue of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, honoring his contributions to national development and unity.
