Rahul Gandhi slams Assam CM, alleges misuse of power
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Monday came out strongly in support of party spokesperson Pawan Khera after the Assam Police approached the Supreme Court challenging the transit anticipatory bail granted to him.
Taking to X, Gandhi launched a sharp attack on Himanta Biswa Sarma, saying, “The present CM of Assam is the most corrupt in the country. He will not escape the law. His abuse of state power to harass his political opponents and critics is against the Constitution.”
Congress vows to stand firm amid legal battle
Reinforcing the party’s stand, Gandhi added, “The questions that are being raised have to be probed. Transparency, accountability of power and rule of law are the basis of our Constitutional values. The Congress Party stands with Pawan Khera. We will not be intimidated.”
His remarks come as the political row intensifies over the legal proceedings against Khera.
Assam Police challenges bail in Supreme Court
The latest development follows Assam Police moving the Supreme Court against the relief granted to Khera by the Telangana High Court. The court had provided him transit anticipatory bail for one week, allowing him time to approach the Gauhati High Court for further legal protection.
The case stems from an FIR filed based on a complaint by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, wife of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, over Khera’s remarks during a press conference alleging that she holds multiple foreign passports.
Police action and searches intensify controversy
Earlier, a team of Assam Police had reached Hyderabad in search of Khera. Reports also suggest that officials conducted a search at his residence in Delhi as part of the ongoing investigation.
The case has now turned into a high-stakes political and legal confrontation, with both sides accusing each other of misuse of power and political vendetta.

With the matter now before the Supreme Court, the issue is expected to have wider political implications, especially as debates around constitutional rights, free speech, and alleged misuse of investigative agencies continue to dominate national discourse.
