The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is poised for a change in leadership as seasoned bureaucrat Bhushan Gagrani prepares to assume the mantle of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator, succeeding Iqbal Singh Chahal. The Election Commission confirmed Gagrani’s appointment on Wednesday, marking a significant transition in the administration of Mumbai’s civic body.

Who is IAS Bhushan Gagrani?

Bhushan Gagrani, a distinguished member of the 1990 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), boasts a wealth of experience across various key departments. Notably, he recently served as the additional chief secretary to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in Maharashtra. Gagrani’s illustrious career encompasses pivotal roles in urban development, Marathi language promotion, and water resource management. His tenure includes stints in crucial departments such as industries, public health, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), among others.

Gagrani’s appointment underscores his transition from a prominent position in the urban development domain to a pivotal advisory role within the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) under Eknath Shinde’s leadership.

Iqbal Chahal’s Removal by EC

Gagrani’s impending succession follows the Election Commission’s directive to transfer the incumbent BMC Commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal. The EC’s decision stemmed from non-compliance with its earlier order, dated December 21, 2023, which mandated the removal of officers directly associated with elections or those completing three years of service in a district within the last four years.

In response to the EC’s directive, Chahal is expected to assume the role of Additional Chief Secretary within the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), thereby transitioning to a pivotal advisory role within the state government.

As Bhushan Gagrani prepares to assume leadership at the BMC, his appointment heralds a new chapter in Mumbai’s governance landscape. With his wealth of experience and expertise, Gagrani is poised to navigate the challenges and opportunities facing the city, steering the BMC towards continued progress and development.
