At least nine people have died in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district after allegedly consuming spurious liquor, officials said on Sunday. The suspected liquor poisoning incident was reported overnight between Saturday and Sunday in two villages under Banda tehsil, around 30 kilometres from the district headquarters.
The deceased are reportedly residents of Baraj village. Following reports of multiple people falling seriously ill, Sagar Superintendent of Police Anurag Sujania reached the area along with a police team to assess the situation.
Sagar Collector Pratibha Pal said several people had developed health complications after allegedly consuming toxic liquor. While some victims died, others were taken for medical evaluation at the Civil Hospital.
Authorities have launched medical screening in the affected villages to identify anyone who may have consumed the suspected liquor. Collector Pratibha Pal urged residents who had consumed alcohol recently or were experiencing symptoms to seek medical attention without delay. She said, “A team of doctors is conducting screenings in two nearby villages. Anyone who suspects they are exhibiting symptoms or has consumed any form of liquor in the last 24 to 48 hours should certainly get examined by a doctor or visit the Civil Hospital for a check-up. We are monitoring such cases, and further action regarding the matter is being taken.”
Medical teams are continuing examinations in the area as officials work to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Authorities are also expected to investigate the source and composition of the liquor allegedly consumed by the victims.
The exact cause of the deaths has not yet been officially established, and further details are awaited as the investigation and medical examinations continue.
