Maharashtra: New Social Media Guidelines Issued for Government Employees; Violations to Attract Disciplinary Action

Mumbai: The state government has issued a fresh set of social media guidelines for government employees, aimed at curbing the misuse of digital platforms and protecting the integrity of official information. The General Administration Department released a circular outlining the new rules, which all government staff are now expected to follow strictly.

The guidelines have been introduced to address issues such as the leaking of confidential government information, the spread of misinformation, and the posting of unauthorized opinions or reactions on social media platforms, which may violate service conduct rules.

According to the circular, any government employee found breaching these norms will face strict disciplinary action. Officials have emphasized that the move is essential in an era where social media activity can have wide-reaching consequences, including public confusion and damage to the credibility of state institutions.

The government has instructed all departments to ensure that employees are made aware of the new directives and to monitor compliance regularly.
