Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has announced a major decision to promote the Marathi language, making it mandatory for all government, semi-government, and municipal corporation offices to communicate in Marathi. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ government has also directed the installation of signboards in offices to encourage Marathi usage and mandated Marathi language keyboards on government office computers.

A government resolution issued on Monday specifies that all employees in state-run and related offices must converse in Marathi with visitors, except for those from outside India or non-Marathi-speaking states. Any violation of this rule can be formally reported to the in-charge of the respective office, and unsatisfactory action on the complaint can be escalated to the Marathi Language Committee of the Maharashtra Legislature.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has emphasized the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in preserving and promoting Marathi literature. Speaking at the third ‘Vishwa Marathi Sammelan’ at Fergusson College in Pune, he instructed the Marathi Language Department to develop an AI-based language model to support Marathi literature and ensure its accessibility for future generations.

The decision follows the central government’s recognition of Marathi as a classical language last year, a milestone that Fadnavis hailed as a long-overdue acknowledgment of Marathi’s literary and cultural heritage.
