New Delhi: Just a day before the Assembly elections, Delhi Police on Tuesday registered a case against Delhi Chief Minister Atishi for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). Another case was filed against her supporters for reportedly attacking a police officer.
According to police, two AAP members—Ashmit and Sagar Mehta—were arrested for “obstructing and assaulting” the head constable of Govindpuri Police Station at around 1 AM. The police claimed that Atishi, who is contesting from Kalkaji, violated MCC by gathering at Fateh Singh Marg with ten vehicles and nearly sixty supporters. When asked to leave, she allegedly refused.
Reacting to the case, Atishi accused the Delhi Police and the Election Commission of bias. She alleged that she was being targeted for raising concerns over BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri’s “open violation” of the MCC. Taking to X, she wrote, “Ramesh Bidhuri ji’s family members are openly violating the code of conduct. No action is being taken against them. I filed a complaint and called the police and @ECISVEEP, and they filed a case against me!”
Atishi also alleged that two individuals who were recording MCC violations were illegally detained by the police. She shared a video on X, claiming that one of them was beaten and taken away. “You can see in this video that the police are kicking him. Action was taken against the person who made the video, but not against the one who broke the rules,” she stated.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police confirmed that a separate case had been filed against Atishi and her supporters for obstructing government work and assaulting a police officer. The incident has sparked a political storm just ahead of the crucial elections.
