Mumbai: Mumbai’s suburban railway network is set for a major transformation, with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announcing plans to reduce the time gap between two local trains from 180 seconds to 150 seconds and eventually to just 120 seconds. The move aims to ease overcrowding and improve efficiency. Nearly 300 additional local train services will be introduced in phases, adding to the existing 3,000 daily services after key infrastructure projects are completed. To support this expansion, around 300 km of new railway tracks will be laid across Mumbai.

The minister also revealed that Mumbai’s suburban network will soon get new-design local trains with better acceleration, enhanced ventilation, and advanced suspension systems to improve passenger comfort. Additionally, Maharashtra has received ₹23,778 crore in the Union Budget 2025-26 for railway projects, marking a 20-fold increase compared to allocations under previous UPA governments. To ensure seamless funding and faster execution of railway projects, the Maharashtra government has signed a tripartite agreement with the Centre and the Reserve Bank of India.

With ₹16,400 crore worth of railway projects already in progress, Mumbai’s local train network is set for a major upgrade, promising faster, safer, and more comfortable travel for millions of daily commuters.
