Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray on Saturday strongly criticised the Maharashtra government following the fatal Metro Line 4 construction accident in Mulund West, saying repeated lapses show that safety is being ignored.
After a concrete segment from the under-construction Metro corridor fell on vehicles at LBS Marg, killing one person and injuring three others, Thackeray posted a detailed message on X questioning the handling of infrastructure projects in Mumbai.
In his tweet, he wrote in full:
“Another day, another accident in Mumbai’s infra works. A slab from the Metro Line 4 project has fallen on vehicles in Mulund, killing one person and injuring others. Is there absolutely no value for human life? Will the contractor be blacklisted or will there be a token fine and then more contracts awarded? We have seen pillars painted before completion, poor barricading at sites, traffic chaos and repeated risks to citizens. Who is accountable for this?”
Thackeray alleged that such incidents are not isolated and pointed to what he described as ongoing negligence at major construction sites. He questioned whether authorities would take strict action against contractors or treat the tragedy as routine.
The accident occurred around noon near a metro pier close to the Mulund Fire Station. A heavy concrete portion reportedly detached from height and landed directly on a passing autorickshaw and car. Emergency responders pulled out the injured from beneath the debris and rushed them to hospital. One victim was declared dead, while three others are undergoing treatment.
The project is being executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which confirmed that a parapet section fell from the structure and said teams were coordinating with civic and disaster management authorities to secure the area.
