Mumbai: In a significant political development, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray have separately expressed their willingness to join forces for the greater good of Maharashtra and the Marathi community. The rare convergence of intent has sparked discussions about a potential thaw in the long-standing rift between the estranged cousins.

During a podcast with filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar, released on Saturday, Raj Thackeray responded to a question about reconciliation with Uddhav by saying, “For me, the interest of Maharashtra is bigger and everything else is secondary before it. For that I can set aside minor disputes and I’m ready to work with Uddhav. Only question is if he too is ready for it.”

Just hours later, Uddhav Thackeray echoed a similar sentiment at the 57th annual general meeting of the Bharatiya Kamgar Sena, the trade union wing of his party. “I, too, am ready to set aside minor disputes for the Marathi language and Maharashtra. I am ready to work together, but he (Raj) should not host anti-Maharashtra people and parties anymore, and take the oath in front of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj,” he said.

The mutual overtures have generated buzz across Maharashtra’s political circles, as the two leaders have long remained on opposing paths since Raj’s departure from the Shiv Sena in 2006.

While political alliances remain a matter of strategy and timing, this exchange suggests the door to reconciliation is not entirely closed. With the Lok Sabha elections behind and the Maharashtra Assembly elections approaching in late 2024, a potential realignment between the Thackeray cousins could reshape the political landscape in the state.
