New Delhi: India on Saturday strongly condemned the brutal killing of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a respected Hindu community leader from Dinajpur, Bangladesh, calling it part of a disturbing pattern of targeted violence against minorities in the country.

“We have noted with distress the abduction and brutal killing of Shri Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a Hindu minority leader in Bangladesh. This killing follows a pattern of systematic persecution of Hindu minorities under the interim government even as the perpetrators of previous such events roam with impunity,” said Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in a post on X.

Jaiswal added, “We condemn this incident and once again remind the interim government to live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities, including Hindus, without inventing excuses or making distinctions.”

According to a report by The Daily Star, Roy was abducted and later found dead on Thursday night in Dinajpur’s Biral upazila. Quoting police and family members, the report said Roy’s wife, Shantana, recalled that her husband received a suspicious phone call around 4:30 PM. “The call was made by the perpetrators to confirm his presence at home,” she said.

Roy, who served as vice-president of the Biral unit of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, was a prominent voice in the Hindu community. His killing has sent shockwaves through minority groups, who have raised alarm over increasing insecurity and lack of accountability.

Indian authorities have reiterated the need for swift justice in the case and called on the Bangladesh interim government to ensure the safety and dignity of its minority citizens.
