Srinagar: The Indian Army successfully facilitated the return of the mortal remains of two missing youth from Uri tehsil, Baramulla district, Jammu and Kashmir, who tragically drowned in the Jhelum River earlier this month.

The incident occurred on March 5, when Yasir Hussain Shah, a resident of Busgran, Uri, and Asiya Bano from Kundi Barjala, Uri, were reported to have drowned in the river. In response, the district administration sought assistance from the Indian Army, which, along with the Marine Commandos (MARCOS), promptly launched an extensive search operation.

On March 20, after sustained and challenging efforts, the Indian Army located the body of Yasir Hussain Shah in the Jhelum River. However, strong water currents caused the body to drift across the Line of Control (LoC) into the Chakothi sector of Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

In an exemplary display of humanitarian cooperation, Indian Army officials coordinated with their Pakistani counterparts to retrieve the mortal remains. On March 22, the bodies of both youths were formally handed over to Indian authorities at the Kaman Aman Setu in the Uri sector.

The remains were subsequently returned to their respective families for final rites. The bereaved families expressed profound gratitude to the Indian Army for their swift and dedicated efforts, ensuring the dignified return of their loved ones’ mortal remains from PoJK.
