Recent reports of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest have caught the attention of the United States, with a State Department spokesperson expressing concern and emphasizing the need for a fair legal process, as reported by Reuters.
“We encourage a fair, transparent, and timely legal process for Chief Minister Kejriwal,” the U.S. spokesperson stated in response to inquiries about Kejriwal’s arrest in connection with alleged irregularities related to the now-defunct Delhi excise policy.
Kejriwal was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 after his name emerged multiple times in the chargesheet filed by the central agency.
The ED has accused Kejriwal of being in contact with individuals involved in formulating the excise policy, allegedly resulting in undue benefits for them in exchange for kickbacks to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The arrest drew international attention, with the German foreign ministry’s spokesperson emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles and the presumption of innocence.
“We have taken note, India is a democratic country. We assume and expect that the standards relating to independence of Judiciary and basic democratic principles will also be applied in this case,” remarked the German spokesperson.
Reacting to the German foreign ministry’s statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a stern response, summoning the German Deputy Chief of Mission in New Delhi to convey its protest.
“The German Deputy Chief of Mission in New Delhi was summoned today and conveyed India’s strong protest on their Foreign Office Spokesperson’s comments on our internal affairs,” stated the MEA, denouncing the remarks as interference in India’s judicial process and undermining the independence of the judiciary.
