Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to travel to India in September to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi, according to reports citing sources.
The visit comes as India prepares to host the 18th BRICS Summit under its 2026 chairship, giving New Delhi an important platform to engage with leaders from major emerging economies.
India to host 18th BRICS Summit
India took over the BRICS chairship from Brazil at the beginning of 2026 and will host the grouping’s summit in the national capital.
The theme chosen by India for its BRICS chairship is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”.
Pezeshkian’s expected presence will add importance to the summit, particularly because Iran became a full member of BRICS in 2024.
Iran joined BRICS in 2024
Iran became a full BRICS member in 2024, along with Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates.
Indonesia subsequently joined the grouping in 2025, taking the number of full BRICS members to 11.
Iran’s participation reflects its growing engagement with the BRICS platform as the group expands its role in global economic and diplomatic affairs.
Modi and Pezeshkian met at BRICS Summit in Russia
Pezeshkian and Prime Minister Narendra Modi previously met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024.
During that meeting, the two leaders discussed India’s relations with Iran as well as wider regional and international issues.
The upcoming visit could provide another opportunity for the two countries to discuss bilateral cooperation and developments in West Asia.
Iranian Foreign Minister visited India earlier
Pezeshkian’s expected visit follows Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s trip to India in June for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
During his visit, Araghchi spoke about India’s growing role in international diplomacy and said New Delhi could play a greater role in efforts to reduce tensions in West Asia.
He also said Iran was open to a constructive role by India in efforts aimed at resolving the regional crisis.
Iran stresses diplomacy over conflict
Araghchi had said that there was no military solution to the crisis and that a negotiated settlement was the preferred way forward.
His comments highlighted Tehran’s interest in diplomatic engagement at a time when tensions in West Asia remain high.
The Iranian foreign minister also held discussions with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during his visit to India.
