Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday, marking an important diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Dhaka at a time when bilateral relations are facing fresh strain.
The meeting took place a day after Trivedi held discussions with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, who was also present during Monday’s interaction with the Prime Minister.
The back-to-back meetings come against the backdrop of renewed diplomatic friction following former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s virtual address from New Delhi on August 5.
Hasina’s Address Adds To Diplomatic Strain
Relations between India and Bangladesh have faced renewed pressure since Hasina addressed a virtual gathering in New Delhi on August 5, two years after she was removed from power following a student-led uprising in Bangladesh.
During the address, Hasina spoke about her intention to return to Bangladesh in December and said she wanted to help restore democracy in the country. Her remarks triggered a strong reaction from Dhaka.
Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry subsequently lodged a protest over the former prime minister’s statements, arguing that the episode had affected public sentiment and created additional complications for bilateral cooperation.
India Keeps Distance From Hasina Event
New Delhi has maintained that it was not involved in the event from which Hasina delivered her address.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has said the programme was organised by a private media organisation and that the government neither participated in nor endorsed any views expressed during the event.
Hasina has been living in India since August 5, 2024, when she left Bangladesh following the political upheaval that ended her long tenure as prime minister.
Trivedi Signals Importance Of Direct Dialogue
The Indian envoy’s latest meetings in Dhaka underline the importance of maintaining direct diplomatic communication between the two neighbouring countries despite the recent tensions.
Trivedi had met Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman on Sunday before meeting Tarique Rahman a day later. The discussions come as both sides face several sensitive issues that could influence the future course of bilateral relations.
The engagement is also significant because India has invited Tarique Rahman to attend the BRICS Summit in September in his capacity as the current chair of BIMSTEC.
The meetings could therefore provide an opportunity for India and Bangladesh to address recent friction through diplomatic channels while keeping broader bilateral cooperation on track.
